The 1073 has been used massively in studio and live applications for decades and is still considered the "holy grail" of mic preamps today. The Warm Audio WA73 family offers one and two channel recreations of this classic British preamp (with & without EQ), all of which pay careful and humble homage to the original circuitry.The WA73 family of preamps are boutique preamps that can be very well categorised as studio and live workhorses at the same time. The classic 1073 circuit is known as a versatile tool that harmonises fantastically with all types of microphones, from condenser to dynamic and ribbon. The newly launched WA73 family is equally suitable for all types of microphones and sources such as vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, bass, drums, percussion, orchestra, keyboards, and even as a sound shaping tool to perform partial or full mixes. With 80 dB of gain, a fully discrete balanced signal path equipped with high quality Carnhill transformers and a versatile 3-band inductor EQ (on WA73-EQ and WA273-EQ products), there is no recording, mixing or engineering task that the WA73, WA73-EQ, WA273 and WA273-EQ can't handle and excite.Hand-wired, hand-assembled:The classic 1073 was hand-wired and so is the WA73 family. According to a number of audio gurus, part of the classic sound character of the 1073 is due to the hand-wired circuitry of the units. The entire WA73 preamp family (including the EQs) is authentically hand-wired and hand-assembled, including the PCB components, which are all assembled by hand.UK Custom Carnhill Transformer:1073 enthusiasts are unequivocal about the importance of components in classic circuits. A very common topic of conversation is the transformers. Various versions of transformers have been used in classic vintage equipment over the years. The most popular of these were the very first versions from Marinair Radar. Marinair Radar transformers are considered the first choice for 1073 preamps due to their sonic characteristics. Warm Audio worked closely with the renowned manufacturer Carnhill Transformers from Cambridgeshire, UK, to develop the most faithful possible replicas of these coveted transformers. These fantastic Carnhill transformers are used throughout the WA73 family. As a result, the WA73 family comes closer to the sound of the early vintage devices than any other modern 1073 preamp.Signal path and capacitors:An important part of classic British circuitry that is not often talked about is the different types of capacitors and output transistors that were used. In order to maintain the integrity of the original design, it became apparent in the development process that it was important to use tantalum and polystyrene capacitors in the signal path and certain output transistors that behave much more smoothly in the high gain settings than what is typically found in modern 1073 replicas.

A Whole New Vintage - over 50 years in the making:The Shelford Channel is the logical consequence and evolution of Rupert Neves' work. It brings together the best of 50 years of development and incorporates the highlights of classic console modules such as the 1073, 1064, 1081 and 2254, but carefully adapted to the needs of the 21st century recording studio.The Shelford Channel includes a newly developed Class-A transformer-gain mic preamp, the Best Of The Classics inductor EQ from the Shelford 5051 and 5052 and a new diode bridge compressor based on the classic 2254 design. The channel strip also features a dual output tap.The input section - new character microphone preamp and RNDI:Similar to the times when Rupert was still developing in Little Shelford, over 40 years ago, the preamp section was equipped with a transformer via which the first 15dB of amplification is realised. The rest of the 72dB gain is provided by a discrete Class A amplifier. This special circuit design, which is based on the 1073, gives the preamp its fat character with enormous recognition value. A LoCut filter with an operating range of 20-250Hz, microphone/line level switch, 48V phantom power and a phase reverse switch are also part of the preamp section. The input is also equipped with the same DI circuit as the popular RNDI.Best Of The Classics equaliser - The Inductor EQ:The three-band equaliser has been taken from the previously available Shelford modules 5051 and 5052. The inductor EQ offers highlights from old circuit designs such as the 1064 and 1073, but the Shelford Channel has been fitted with modern components, offering the character of the originals on the one hand and the improved measurement values of modern circuits on the other.Versatile compression options - the diode bridge compressor:The diode bridge compressor is a new development based on the legendary 2254 compressor and masters the finest processing steps just as easily as massive interventions. Compared to the original, the Shelford Channel compressor has a timing option and a blend control for parallel compression. It can also be stereo-linked and is equipped with a side-chain insert. In contrast to the crystal-clear and rather restrained processing options of the Portico II channel compressor, the Shelford channel compressor is designed to make a real statement with its compression.Dual tap - The dual-tap output stage with variable silk function:The Shelford Channel is equipped with two physical outputs that can be tapped in parallel. One output delivers the full level, while the second delivers 6dB less and can therefore be driven into saturation without overloading the connected converters.As in most devices from Rupert Neve Designs, the Shelford Channel also has the infinitely variable Silk function (blue and red) integrated into the circuit, which saturates the output transformer and thus enhances signals with additional overtones.A lot to see - the VU meter:The VU meter displays either the output level or the level reduction.Double Voltage Power - Powerful power supply with exceptional power:The Shelford Channel is supplied with power via an internal +/-24V power supply unit.
