The Listem Mic Compressor in API500 format is borrowed from the legendary SL 4000 E console of the 1980s and was described at the time as the "secret weapon" of sound engineers. Originally, this compressor was only designed to avoid clipping in the return feed of the communication track. However, with its fixed attack and release curves, the LMC was ideal for an "ambient drum sound". For its role as an independent processor tool, the LMC was equipped with additional features and was thus given the suffix "+".

If there's one mic preamp that professional engineers of all ages around the world adore in equal measure and that has shaped the sound of countless rock and pop albums over the last 50 years like no other, it's definitely the 1073. The 1073 has been used massively in studio and live applications for decades and is still considered the "holy grail" of mic preamps today. The Warm Audio WA73 family offers one and two channel recreations of this classic British preamp (with & without EQ), all of which pay careful and humble homage to the original circuitry. The WA73 family of preamps are boutique preamps that can be very well categorised as studio and live workhorses at the same time. The classic 1073 circuit is known as a versatile tool that harmonises fantastically with all types of microphones, from condenser to dynamic and ribbon. The newly launched WA73 family is equally suitable for all types of microphones and sources such as vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, bass, drums, percussion, orchestra, keyboards, and even as a sound shaping tool to perform partial or full mixes. With 80 dB of gain, a fully discrete balanced signal path equipped with high quality Carnhill transformers and a versatile 3-band inductor EQ (on WA73-EQ and WA273-EQ products), there is no recording, mixing or engineering task that the WA73, WA73-EQ, WA273 and WA273-EQ can't handle and excite.Hand-wired, hand-assembled:The classic 1073 was hand-wired and so is the WA73 family. According to a number of audio gurus, part of the classic sound character of the 1073 is due to the hand-wired circuitry of the units. The entire WA73 preamp family (including the EQs) is authentically hand-wired and hand-assembled, including the PCB components, which are all assembled by hand.UK Custom Carnhill Transformer:1073 enthusiasts are unequivocal about the importance of components in classic circuits. A very common topic of conversation is the transformers. Various versions of transformers have been used in classic vintage equipment over the years. The most popular of these were the very first versions from Marinair Radar. Marinair Radar transformers are considered the first choice for 1073 preamps due to their sonic characteristics. Warm Audio worked closely with the renowned manufacturer Carnhill Transformers from Cambridgeshire, UK, to develop the most faithful possible replicas of these coveted transformers. These fantastic Carnhill transformers are used throughout the WA73 family. As a result, the WA73 family comes closer to the sound of the early vintage devices than any other modern 1073 preamp.Signal path and capacitors:An important part of classic British circuitry that is not often talked about is the different types of capacitors and output transistors that were used. In order to maintain the integrity of the original design, it became apparent in the development process that it was important to use tantalum and polystyrene capacitors in the signal path and certain output transistors that behave much more smoothly in the high gain settings than what is typically found in modern 1073 replicas.

Scarlett OctoPre features eight microphone inputs with second generation Scarlett preamps. There are also balanced line inputs which, like the mic inputs, pass through Focusrite's precision 24-bit converters at up to 192kHz and 109dB dynamic range. The easily accessible instrument inputs on the front panel offer more than enough headroom to cleanly process even the hottest guitar pickup signals. The inputs offer plenty of headroom and additional pad switches on each channel. This makes Scarlett OctoPre the ideal solution for recording not only drums, but also guitars, keyboards, vocals and more. The eight balanced line outputs are tapped directly from the inputs. In parallel, the signals can be recorded digitally via the ADAT output. The ADAT interface offers a quick and easy way to increase the number of analogue inputs. This interface works with inexpensive "fibre optic cables", i.e. optical cables, which can be used to transmit up to eight audio channels. Simply connect the ADAT output of OctoPre to an ADAT input on your interface, set the desired sample rate and you're ready to go. Many interfaces from Focusrite or other manufacturers are now equipped with an ADAT input.

Legendary EQ in modern solid-state technology:The Lindell Audio LiNTEC Vintage Program Equaliser is constructed as a solid-state design in order to utilise the essential advantages over tube circuits: The transients are reproduced accurately and concisely with a slightly soft, creamy and punchy character. The noise floor is also significantly reduced. The very low manufacturing tolerances allow the use of any two LiNTEC equalisers as a stereo setup - each pair is a matched pair. In addition, maintenance effort and costs are reduced in the long term as no tubes need to be replaced.Noble sound profile and low-end trickThe classic sound character of the LiNTEC Vintage Program Equaliser from Lindell Audio lends tracks genuine vintage charm. The typical warm and harmonious sound of a famous equaliser has been integrated into the circuit design to give modern productions a vintage flair if required. The highlight: this effect is retained even when the EQ is set flat. The LiNTEC Vintage Program Equaliser is also suitable for using a tried and tested low-end trick: By simultaneously boosting and attenuating low frequencies, a unique filter curve is produced that creates a very special sound and has already helped a number of songs to success.Vintage workflow with gridded potsThe Lindell Audio LiNTEC Vintage Program Equaliser is equipped with a classic control panel: Boost and Cut are available for low and high frequencies respectively to boost or cut the respective frequency. Separate boost and cut frequencies can be set for the high frequencies. Both treble bands share a bandwidth control. The rasterised potentiometers enable simple and precise stereo adjustment as well as quick restoration of previous settings. A prominent bypass switch is used for A/B comparison. A large VU meter allows the signal to be levelled and can be adjusted on the rear panel. The output level can also be adjusted there.

The Tube Tech LCA 2B is probably one of the real highlights in the outboard sector. The stereo device is based on all-tube technology and offers independent compressor and limiter per channel, including stereo link of course. Attack and release time can be set via pre-sets or manually. In stereo mode, the channel with the highest gain reduction controls the other channel simultaneously. With the same gain control setting, the stereo image is thus secured. With a fine comp. setting low ratio e.g. 2:1 comp. 4-6dB and the limiter working above it, a maximum level of overload protection is achieved in master mode.

The use of Blore Edwards components is exceptional for 1073-style preamps/EQs in this price range and once again demonstrates the importance Warm Audio places on the high quality of its affordable products.
Often imitated, never equalled - the analogue compressor from the 1980s G series has since become a legend. A comparatively simple device for a comparatively simple purpose: the mix sounds more powerful and has more punch, more drive. This compressor has been immortalised on countless popular recordings and is now nicknamed "The Glue" by insiders, as it holds the mix together like no other dynamics tool.
Hermes is revolutionising mastering. It is now possible to have an audio signal processed by up to eight 2-channel processors in any order that can be saved. You can compare up to four complex processing chains at the touch of a button. Hermes also has two freely assignable parallel mix stages, which can be assigned to each of the eight processors and saved with a processing chain. This means that two compressors with different parallel mix settings can also be compared. The routing is completely passive with gas-encapsulated and gold-vapour-plated high-end relays. All active stages, such as the input/output stages and the parallel mix stages, work with SPL's own 120V technology.Hermes speeds up mastering workflows in a way that was previously difficult to achieve and maximises the use of existing equipment. The time-consuming re-plugging alone had made real comparative listening almost impossible. Now you can change, save and compare processing chains in a matter of seconds. All with real buttons, relays and without additional software.
